IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT CAL RENTALS SERVICES
DURING WINTER BREAK!

The Cal Rentals office will be closed from December 22, 2014 through January 4, 2015 to comply with campus energy curtailment policy.  While we cannot provide walk-in, telephone or email assistance to our customers during this period, we will offer the following services:

• LANDLORDS AND LISTERS may place new ads or modify existing ads online. (Note: Ads submitted online are always reviewed for content before posting, and during this holiday period there may be a time lag of up to 72 hours before an ad appears. In most cases it will be much shorter.  Please do not re-submit if you cannot view your ad online immediately. If you do not see your ad online after 72 hours has elapsed, there is a problem or issue with your submission, and we will contact you for more information on or after January 5).
• CURRENT HOUSEHUNTERS ACCOUNT HOLDERS may search the online database for new rental opportunities. If your account expires while we are closed and you have not found a place by January 5, please let us know and we will extend your account to make up for the days we are closed.
• NEW STUDENT OR FACULTY AND STAFF HOUSEHUNTERS with a CalNet ID can open a rental listings account via the CalNet Authentication here, pay the service fee online and immediately start searching the rental listings database.  If you don’t have a CalNet ID, please register online as a student or faculty & staff Newcomer/Affiliate and provide us with documentation of your status at Cal via email to homeinfo@berkeley.edu or fax at 510-642-4026.  When we return in 2015, we will approve your account request and send you a link to our web payment system.

We have information about the rental market, advice for conducting a housing search, rental listings and much more for Students, Faculty and Staff.  All types of listings are available online for viewing 24/7, at your convenience.  Students pay only $20 for 3 months of listing access and Faculty & Staff customers pay only $25 for 1 month of listing access.*

• If you don’t have a CalNet ID, Cal Rentals considers you a “Newcomer/Affiliate.”  We will need documentation of your status at Cal before you can start your search.

Visiting Berkeley this summer?

Our student summer sublets are available to any summer visitor for a $20 fee. Evidence of UCB affiliation is not required. The service includes online access to listings for shared housing or vacant units that are available for a maximum of 3 months. You can also find a great deal of helpful information about Berkeley and the surrounding areas on our website.

Top 5 Summer Sublet Facts:

1. Most summer sublets are listed AFTER spring break, which for UC Berkeley this year is the last week in March. We see a big increase in sublet listings in April and even May.

2. Most summer sublets are for a full two or three months, usually beginning sometime around mid-May to June 1 and ending in late July or by mid-August. You may wish to plan your visit accordingly or try to negotiate with the lister for a shorter term if you need it.

3. It is UP TO YOU to negotiate the terms and conditions of your sublet with the listers. The sublet listings will include either a telephone number, which will usually be in the 510 area code unless otherwise noted, and/or an e-mail address, or possibly (but more rarely) open house information, which would require you to be nearby in order to participate in the open house.

4. Rent may be negotiable. If your offer is turned down, ask the lister to keep your name and number in the event he or she changes his mind.

5. Sometimes care of pets or plants care is involved.

To obtain access to the Student Summer Sublet listings, please do the following:

• Click on Find Rental Housing

• Select Register Online and then on Newcomer/Affiliate Student,

• Complete and submit the online form (be sure to make note of the User ID that will be assigned to you)

• Send an email to homeinfo@berkeley.edu with subject line of Student Summer Sublet Request and include the following information in the body:

• Your name

• Your approximate arrival date
